Friendship

(Friendship is a ship that should never sink.)

The best thing, my friend, about us friends,
Is not that we laugh and cry,
Or stay together
In all the bad weather,
But that we don’t say goodbye.
The best thing about being friends, my friend,
Is we don’t ever say goodbye.

We stay in touch, my friend,
And I see you, come what may,
When often we call,
Talk of nothing at all,
We are friends in every way.
The fun thing about being friends, my friend,
Is we talk throughout each day.

We follow, my friend, our lives,
But we make together some time,
And I send a letter,
But it doesn’t get better,
It seems you’re forgetting our rhyme.
The thing about being friends, my friend,
Is forgetting’s a terrible crime.

Then the years, my friend, go by,
At a wedding, a death, we share
But who we used to be,
Is now history,
We’re different, now, to be fair.
The sad thing about being friends, my friend,
Is we simply now don’t care.

The worst thing, my friend, about us friends,
Is not that we laugh and cry,
Or that now we’re alone,
Found new friends to own,
It’s that we didn’t say goodbye.
The worst thing about being friends, my friend,
We never even said goodbye.
